The problem with flatbed dispatch
You run a flatbed and you already know the load is only half the job. The other half is securement — chains, binders, straps, tarps, edge protectors — and not every broker thinks about that when they post the rate. You get a rate that looks decent on the board, then you find out the load is full lumber with custom tarping, and suddenly an hour of your time vanished before you left the dock.
Flatbed freight is also the most physically demanding equipment category in trucking. Steel coils require precise chain placement. Lumber stacks need tarp weights and tie patterns that hold at highway speed. Machinery moves often need pilot car coordination and oversize permits before the truck even moves. Most load boards don't differentiate. A broker posting a $2.71 flatbed load isn't always telling you what's on it — and if you don't know the broker, you don't know what you're walking into.
The lanes are lopsided too. Texas steel moves north and east all day. But getting a loaded backhaul from Oklahoma City down to the Rio Grande Valley takes relationships — the brokers who cover lumber yards and construction supply chains in those corridors don't broadcast loads; they call the carriers they know.
How that flatbed booking pain compounds
Deadhead miles hit flatbed operators harder than almost any other equipment type. You can't take a random dry-van backhaul to reposition. You need a load that justifies the securement time and the physical work. A 200-mile empty run to get to a decent flatbed lane can erase the margin from your last load entirely.
Brokers who don't specialize in flatbed freight lowball securement-heavy loads because they're pricing against a generic truck, not against what it actually takes to strap steel coil or tarp a full lumber package. You've probably taken a load like that once and sworn you'd never do it again — but when the load board is thin, the pressure to fill your next day is real.
Over-dimensional and permitted loads add a layer of pre-trip coordination that solo operators managing their own dispatch just don't have bandwidth for. Routing, height/width clearances, state permit lead times — every piece of that has to be handled before the truck rolls. If you're chasing loads and managing permits at the same time, one of those jobs is getting done poorly.
How FOMO books flatbed loads
We work your authority as your agent. When you go empty or when you're approaching your next available window, we're already talking to brokers and sorting through load boards — not waiting for you to start the morning call.
We know the flatbed brokers who are straight about what's on the load. We know which ones clearly list securement requirements on the rate con, which ones actually pay detention when a steel receiver runs behind, and which ones you should avoid when you have two loads to choose from. Building that knowledge takes time you don't have when you're also running miles.
Every load we present to you includes the rate, the lane, the commodity, the broker, and our honest read on what the securement looks like. You approve it or you pass. We never confirm a load without your sign-off. No forced dispatch, no pressure to take a load that doesn't make sense for your truck or your schedule.
We send you the full broker rate confirmation unaltered. What the broker agreed to pay is exactly what you see. No editing, no spread hidden between what the broker pays and what we show you. The rate on your rate con is the rate that hits your factor or your bank.
The 5% flat cut — what it means for flatbed
FOMO's dispatch fee is 5% of your linehaul, per booked load. That's it. We don't take a cut of fuel surcharge, detention, tarping fees, oversize permit cost pass-throughs, layover, TONU, or any other accessorial. Every dollar of accessorial you negotiate is yours.
Flatbed loads often carry commodity-specific accessorials — tarping fees, heavy haul surcharges, pilot car reimbursements — that don't appear on a dry-van rate con. None of that goes through our 5%. Our cut is strictly on the linehaul number, nothing else.
There are no setup fees, no monthly fees, and no weekly minimums. If we don't book a load for you, you don't pay. The 5% only applies when we actually book a load in your authority. Weeks when you're doing your own freight, parked, or on home time, you owe us nothing.
We invoice separately for the 5% — typically weekly. Brokers pay you directly through your factor or your own bank. We never ask for factoring login credentials, banking information, or access to your settlements.
New flatbed authority? We take you from day one.
Most brokers want to see 90 days of active MC history before they'll load a new flatbed carrier. The commodity risk is higher on flatbed — a broker who's been burned by a securement failure on a steel load isn't going to hand the next one to an unknown authority. We know which brokers take fresh MCs on flatbed freight and we vouch for you with them.
No surcharge for new authority carriers. Same 5% flat rate. We've brought new flatbed operators from zero loads to consistent weekly miles. If you're willing to do the work and do the securement right, we'll get you moving.
What you get from FOMO Dispatch
A named primary dispatcher who knows your truck, your home base, your preferred commodity types, and how you want to work. Not a rotation of reps, not a call center — a real person who knows whether you'll tarp or not and what lanes you want to build.
After-hours coverage. Monday morning when a broker calls at 4 AM about a steel load that picks up at 6, somebody on our desk is there. Flatbed construction freight doesn't wait for a 9-to-5 schedule and neither do we.
Factoring setup if you need it. We work with TBS, Apex, OTR, RTS, and most major factors. If you're not set up yet, we'll connect you with a same-day option. No referral kickbacks — we don't make money on which factor you use.
Full transparency on every rate confirmation. You see the unaltered document before the load is confirmed. If a broker tries to change commodity, rate, or securement terms after booking, we push back. That's our job, not yours.
